Vijay, Lokesh Kanagaraj reunite for ‘Thalapathy 67’

Vijay, Lokesh Kanagaraj reunite for ‘Thalapathy 67’

The hit Master combo of actor Vijay and director Lokesh Kanagaraj — as well as music composer Anirudh Ravichander — are set to reunite for Vijay’s next, Thalapathy 67.

The film will be produced by SS Lalit Kumar of 7 Screen Studio and co-produced by Jagadish Palanisamy. Other technicians on board include DOP Manoj Paramahamsa, editor Philomin Raj and choreographer Dinesh. Other cast members are set to be announced soon.

The shooting of the film commenced earlier this month on January 2, and early reports indicate that the film could have a Deepavali release later this year.

Director Lokesh announced the news on social media today, and speculation is rife on Thalapathy 67 also being part of his film universe that includes Kaithi and Vikram. Vijay and Lokesh’s previous film, Master, was a blockbuster success and one of Tamil cinema’s biggest theatrical hits post-pandemic.

'Varisu' box office collection Day 20: Vijay starrer inches towards Rs 300 crore

Vijay’s latest film ‘Varisu’ was released in theatres on January 11. The film clashed at the box office with Ajith’s ‘Thunivu’ which was released on the same day. But the Vijay starrer has been performing well in theatres worldwide and the moviemakers have taken to social media that the film is all set to earn Rs 300 crore at the box office.

January 30, being the day 20 since the film release, theatres are still running with shows houseful and it is reportedly stated that Vijay’s ‘Varisu’ has overpowered Ajith’s ‘Thunivu’ at the box office with its family subject story. According to reports, Vijay’s film has made a total of Rs 194 crore in India and Rs 103 crore abroad including the UK in 20 days and the film is inching towards entering the Rs 300 crore club collection at the box office. The film has already broken many milestone records and is said to be the third highest Tamil grosser in the UK.

It is expected that the film before its final run in theatres will make a gross of Rs 320 crore at the global box office collection. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, ‘Varisu’ is a Tamil and Telugu bilingual film starring Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles. The movie was released in Telugu as ‘Vaarasudu’ on January 14. The rest of the film’s cast included Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shaam, Samyuktha, Sangeetha Krish, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah, and Ganesh Venkataraman. The music for the movie is composed by S Thaman.

Varisu vs Thunivu Box Office Day 14 (Worldwide): Thalapathy Vijay Hits It Out Of The Park With 260 Crores+ Collections, It’s Wait & Watch For Ajith Kumar To Enter The 200 Crore Club

Vijay’s latest film Varisu has gained over Rs 250 crore at the box-office worldwide in only 11 days. The film, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, has been praised for its outstanding performance by reviewers and audiences. The poster the makers posted on Twitter revealed that the flick had earned over Rs 250 crore worldwide.
Even after that, Vijay’s film ran well at the box office by creating new records. This Tamil film has already become the actor’s second-highest-grossing film. As per trade reports, Varisu raked in close to Rs 2 crore on the 14th day of its release. With this, the film’s total collection stands over Rs 154 Crore at the Indian Box Office.

The actioner released in Pongal week has garnered over Rs 210 Crore at the box office as reported by ETimes. Despite stiff competition from Ajith Kumar’s heist action-thriller Thunivu, Varisu earned Rs 30 Crore on its second weekend within two days.

Varisu also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Sarath Kumar, Shaam, Srikanth and Jayasudha in key roles. The film was also dubbed and released in Hindi.

Varisu, which stars Vijay, is a family drama about the youngest son taking over his father’s business empire while dealing with stiff opposition from his two elder brothers. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the film also marked Vijay’s debut in Telugu as the film was also shot in the language along with its Tamil version.

“You know how tough it is to make a film these days? Do you know how much a team is working out there to make a film work? You know how much hard work people are putting in to entertain audiences? Brother, it’s not a joke. There are so many sacrifices every filmmaker is making,” Vamshi said.

Vamshi also heaped praise on his hero Vijay, who puts in so much of hard work to rehearse his steps and dialogues for the movie. Vamshi, while picking on the statement that the film feels like a serial for some, said that people shouldn’t degrade TV serials as they keep so many people engaged at home.

The project, which has been tentatively titled Thalapathy 67, marks the actor-director duo's second onscreen collaboration after the massive success of Master. The much-awaited film, which is said to be a gangster drama, belongs to LCU aka Lokesh Cinematic Universe, the action-crime thriller universe established by director Lokesh Kanagaraj. A new update on the star cast of Thalapathy 67 has now left the audiences super excited.

Kamal Haasan and Chiyaan Vikram join Thalapathy 67 star cast?

If the latest reports are to be believed, legendary actor Kamal Haasan and National award-winner Chiyaan Vikram are set to join the star cast of Thalapathy Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj's ambitious film. The grapevine suggests that Kamal will reprise his character from Vikram, the 2022-released blockbuster in the much-awaited project, which is a new addition to the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. The legend might make a special appearance in the climax portions of Thalapathy 67, thus marking his first onscreen collaboration with Thalapathy Vijay.

Chiyaan Vikram, on the other hand, is expected to play the lead antagonist in Thalapathy 67. According to the rumourmills, Chiyaan's character will be introduced to the Lokesh Cinematic Universe with Thalapathy Vijay's film, just like how Suriya was introduced as the ultimate antagonist 'Rolex' in the climax of the director's last outing Vikram. As per the reports, the Ponniyin Selvan actor has already signed the dotted line and has allowed a call sheet of 30 days for the film.

All the major characters of LCU, including Kamal Haasan, Karthi, and Suriya, along with Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathi, Narain, Arjun Das, and others who played key roles in the previous LCU films, might make appearances in all the upcoming installments. Varisu box office collection Day 9: Thalapathy Vijay's film marches towards Rs 150 crore in TN

Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu's fantastic theatrical run is a testament to his stardom. The film collected over Rs 210 crore and is still going strong at the box office. Now, the film is holding strong at the box office during the weekdays and is putting up decent numbers. It is to be seen if the film picks up its momentum yet again during the weekend. Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu are having a neck-to-neck competition at the box office.
VARISU BOX OFFICE COLLECTION DAY 9
Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, hit the theatres on January 11. The film clashed at the box office with Ajith Kumar's Thunivu.

On its 9th day at the box office, Varisu is estimated to have earned Rs 5.30 crore in India (nett). The film has been doing great business at the overseas market as well, especially in the UK. With the weekend fast approaching, Varisu's collection will see a considerable increase. The film is now inching towards the Rs 150 crore-mark at the box office.

ALL ABOUT VARISU
Varisu is an emotional family entertainer written and directed by Vamshi Paidipally. The film was produced by Dil Raju under Sri Venkateswara Creations for a huge budget. Apart from Vijay, the film features Rashmika Mandanna, Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Jayasudha, Yogi Babu, Srikanth Meka and Shaam in important roles. Composer S Thaman scored the tunes and most of the songs were chartbusters.

Vijay’s BTS video from Varisu emerges as film crosses Rs 220 crore mark, Shaam shares celebratory post. Watch

The cast and crew of Vijay’s Varisu are on cloud nine as the film is raking in big figures at the box office. Now, actor Shaam, who played Vijay’s brother in Varisu, took to Twitter to celebrate the success of the film with a video from the sets of Varisu.

In the video, Vijay and Shaam are seen driving a golf cart on the sets of Varisu. Sharing the video, Shaam wrote that the film crossed Rs 210 crore at the box office in a matter of 7 days. The makers announced the official figures on Twitter for the first-week collection of the film.

According to a source, the Day 8 collection of Varisu will be approximately Rs 220 crores as the film witnessed a dip in footfalls. However, it is expected to cross the Rs 250-crore mark in the next week. Meanwhile, the film is facing strong competition from Ajith’s Thunivu.

Thunivu has so far collected Rs 84 crores in Tamil Nadu alone. Though the Ajith-starrer is trailing behind Varisu by a significant margin of about Rs 30 crore, it is still putting up a good fight. With no big released this week, the two films are expected to maintain their momentum into the third week.

Despite all the frenzy and the box office competition, theatre owners and distributors in Tamil Nadu have expressed their dissatisfaction with a clash of two big films. Earlier, Tiruppur Subramanian, TN Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association President, told Indian Express, “This is just a loss. Big films like these should come out separately that’s when they can realise their potential. Now, the two will cancel out each other and would only lead to a lose-lose situation.”

The latest one to voice out a similar opinion is producer SR Prabhu, who tweeted, “If 2 stars have each 10 crore market & they act together in a film which is a hit might make 12-14cr. Unfortunately, most think, it will do 20Cr. That’s why multi-starters don’t come often. The same goes to festival releases of 2 biggies. So let’s settle with cumulative value (sic).”

Thalapathy 67 update will be out in a week: Here are other developments in Vijay-Lokesh Kanagaraj’s next

Thalapathy 67 update will be out in a week: Here are other developments in Vijay-Lokesh Kanagaraj’s next

Varisu didn’t exactly turn out to be a unanimous hit. Though the box office collection of the film tells a different story, the general consensus is that it didn’t turn out to be an undebatable hit like Vijay’s Master or Bigil. Hence, all eyes are on director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is teaming up with Vijay for the second time for the film, tentatively titled, Thalapathy 67. Ever since the movie was announced, fans have been waiting for some official confirmations on the cast and crew of the project. According to the film’s producer Lalit Kumar, the wait will be over in a matter of ten days.

It was earlier said that Thalapathy 67 updates will be out after the release of Varisu. When Lalit was asked about the same, he told reporters, “Please wait for ten days. All the announcements would be made one by one.”

Other updates about Thalapathy 67:

Meanwhile, director Mysskin, who is playing a pivotal role in Thalapathy 67, spilled some beans about the film confirming that it has already gone on floors. Mysskin said that he was part of an action sequence and Vijay had pulled it off well. He said, “It was a great fight sequence, and he (Vijay) left me with a bloody mouth. I have also fought well with a physique like mine. Lokesh Kanagaraj is a precise filmmaker. He only shoots the moments between A and B and doesn’t teach acting to actors. I liked it about him. Some directors teach acting usually. He doesn’t make actors feel bored and gives us a good space. The film is also interesting and it has a very good crew.”

Is Thalapathy 67 part of Lokesh Cinematic Universe?

One of the biggest questions in fans’ minds is whether or not Thalapathy 67 is part of the same universe, fondly called Lokesh Cinematic universe (LCU), as Kamal Haasan’s Vikram and Karthi’s Kaithi. Earlier, in an interview with a Malayalam channel, actor Narain, who was part of both Vikram and Kaithi, confirmed that Thalapathy 67 is part of LCU. However, there is no official confirmation about the same from Lokesh or the makers.

A new addition

It is also said that Janany, a Sri Lankan, who shot to fame after her stint in Bigg Boss Tamil Season 6, is playing a part in the film. When a news portal reached out to the actor seeking confirmation, she said that she can’t divulge any information about the movie before the official confirmation from the makers.

Other speculations

Other actors who are rumoured to be part of Thalapathy 67 are Trisha, Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, and Malayalam star Nivin Pauly. When Trisha was asked about her role in the film, the Raangi actor said, “You will know in a few weeks whether I am doing both films or not. Or which films I’m in and which I’m not. All of this will be available soon. I don’t want to discuss it because it is not my place to do so. As you can see, Vijay and Ajith are not discussing their upcoming films. It’s a request from the production companies. They should make an announcement whenever they believe it is appropriate.”

Things that stand confirmed about Thalapathy 67:

So far it is confirmed that Gautham Vasudev Menon is part of Thalapathy 67, which was confirmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj during the Galatta Roundtable. Other than that, it is also confirmed that Anirudh Ravichander will be composing the songs for Thalapathy 67.

Vamshi Paidipally to Varisu’s critics: ‘I didn’t say I was making a brilliant film…’

Vamshi Paidipally to Varisu’s critics: ‘I didn’t say I was making a brilliant film…’

Vamshi Paidipally seems to be disappointed with some of the criticism of his latest directorial Varisu. In a recent interview with Viktan, the director lashed out at some of the trolls and criticism of the film. When he was asked about the comparison between Varisu and TV soaps, the director went on to make a long statement claiming that he is not making films for critics but for the audience.

He said, “I don’t disrespect critics, but one thing I want to tell is that my motive for making films is not critics. I am here to make commercial films. I make films for the audience. Critics’ views are subjective. You are already judging a film, and that’s your job and prerogative. We had an 8.30 pm premiere at Sathyam. When the film ended with the dialogue ‘no family is perfect’, everyone gave a standing ovation. We then went to Rohini (theatre) for the 4 am show. When the film ended, everyone stood up and looked at us and started taking photos. That is when Thaman and I got very emotional. Now, I trust these reviews. This is my audience. This is why I make films. My films have been greatly praised and have also been shot down. After seeing Maharshi, they wrote something something. But the film went on to win a National Award.”

Vamshi Paidipally also lashed out at the trend of judging a movie by its poster even before its release. He said, “First, go watch the film, no? Let it come out. Watch it, savour it. Do you all know how tough it is to make a film these days? Do you know how many teams are out there to make a film, and make it work? Do you know how much hard work people are putting in there to entertain? Brother, it is not a joke. There are so many sacrifices every filmmaker is making. There are so many sacrifices every lead actor is making. Thalapathy Vijay is one of the biggest stars in the country. Do you know how much hard work he puts into a film? Even now he rehearses every song and practices every dialogue to come and tell it on screen. Only efforts are in our hands, brother. Results are not in our hands.”

Talking more about the comparison between Varisu and soaps, Paidipally said, “What is this? Why are you degrading serials? Do you know how many people are kept engrossed by serials? Go and see at home. Your moms and grandmas are getting more engrossed in life because of serials. Don’t degrade anything, brother. That’s also a creative job. If you want to put down people, please remember, you are putting down yourself. Don’t be so negative. It will start eating you from the inside. If you want to write or analyse the film, write about what we are trying to tell through the story. And I am making a commercial film, brother. I never said I am making a brilliant movie. I am making films to entertain the audience. And I believe Varisu has entertained, and that’s why it is delivering.”

Meanwhile, Varisu is doing well at the box office. The film has so far collected over Rs 150 crore at the worldwide box office. Also starring Rashmika Mandanna, Prakash Raj and Sarathkumar in pivotal roles, the film has music by S Thaman.

Mysskin on working with Vijay in Thalapathy 67: ‘He looks younger, handsome…’

Mysskin on working with Vijay in Thalapathy 67: ‘He looks younger, handsome…’

Filmmaker Mysskin has shared his experience of working with actor Vijay in the upcoming movie tentatively titled Thalapathy 67. A video of Mysskin talking about Vijay at a Tamil talent show is being widely shared on the internet. During the show, the filmmaker-actor revealed that he came to the programme straight from the sets of Thalapathy 67.

“I rushed here from the shoot. I finished shooting a fight sequence with Vijay,” he said.

Mysskin began his journey in cinema by assisting director Vincent Selva, who helmed the 2002 romantic movie Youth starring Vijay.

“I worked with Vijay while making Youth. And 20 years later, I’m working with him again. He hasn’t changed much. In fact, he is looking more younger and handsome now. I’m very happy to be working with him,” Mysskin added.

Thalapathy 67 is billed as an out-and-out action film. And Mysskin was quite thrilled to have worked under the direction of Lokesh Kanagaraj.

“It was a great fight sequence, and he (Vijay) left me with a bloody mouth. The film is also interesting and it has a very good crew,” he said.

Mysskin made his directorial debut in 2006 with Chithiram Pesuthadi. And he has carved a niche for himself with his very personal style of storytelling. The filmmaker usually explores very dark themes in his films.

Mysskin had earlier revealed that he had written his career-making film Anjathe (2008) with Vijay in mind. However, he didn’t approach Vijay fearing he would be forced to alter his vision to suit Vijay’s star image.

Thalapathy 67 is one of the highly-awaited films. Lokesh Kanagaraj is said to be mounting it on a massive scale with stars sourced from across film industries. Besides Mysskin, the film also stars filmmaker Gautham Menon and Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles. It’s said that Trisha is playing the female lead. However, an official confirmation of the star cast is awaited.

Varisu and Thunivu box office collection day 5: Vijay races ahead of Ajith as his film earns over Rs 150 crore

Varisu and Thunivu box office collection day 5: Vijay races ahead of Ajith as his film earns over Rs 150 crore

It was a mighty clash at the box office this Pongal as Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu and Thunivu headlined by Ajith went head-to-head. After minting moolah in the first four days, both the films witnessed an impressive first Sunday.

Varisu, which opened in Telugu states and Hindi belt days after its Tamil release, saw a solid Sunday. According to Sacnilk, the early estimate of the film’s first Sunday collections is around Rs 18.50 crore, taking its all-India net total to Rs 85.25 cr. Vijay’s film had an overall 74.52% Tamil occupancy on Sunday, the industry tracker noted.

The response for the Hindi version was also encouraging. Popular film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Varisu [#Hindi version] has a decent Weekend 1… Witnesses good jump on Sat and Sun… Fri 79 lacs, Sat 1.55 cr, Sun 1.54 cr. Total: ₹ 3.88 cr. #India biz. Excludes #South circuits. Note: HINDI version only. #VarisuHindi.”

The Telugu version titled Varasudu was released on about 303 screens in Telugu states and the film is said to be drawing huge crowds in both states.

Industry tracker Rajasekar tweeted, “Sankranthi #Vaarasudu 2 Days AP-TG TOTAL SHARE 6.4 Crore official from @SVC_official.”

On Monday evening, production house Sri Venkateswara Creations posted on Twitter, “#MegaBlockbusterVarisu crosses 150Cr+ collection worldwide in just 5 days nanba 🔥”

Thunivu, on the other hand, clocked in Rs 11.50 crore on day five, taking its all-India net collections to Rs 67 crore. It is yet to have a release in Hindi. The heist film had an overall 74.26% Tamil occupancy on Sunday. The film is said to have collected Rs 100 crore from its worldwide ticket sales.

Varisu was the big release of the year for Vijay, who last appeared in 2022’s Beast, which also managed to pull in big numbers but did not receive any critical praise. Varisu, on the other hand, opened to positive reviews.

Indianexpress.com gave three stars to Varisu and called it “ a mix-mash of many films”. A part of the review read, “But this isn’t a film about the plot, it is more about the moments it wants to create in the wafer-thin story. Varisu is shameless about being a fan-pandering affair. It’s all one big stage for its hero to dance, and boy he does! Also, it’s heartening to see Vijay’s return to comedy. His scenes with Yogi Babu, though few and fleeting, are the greatest strength of the film.”

Meanwhile, Thunivu is helmed by H Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor. The film also stars Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, John Kokken, Veeran, Ajay, and GM Sundar.

Varisu box office collection day 3: Thalapathy Vijay starrer is competing head-to-head with Thunivu

Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu, which was released in theatres on Wednesday, witnessed a drop on its third day as the collevction fell from Rs 26 crore on opening day to Rs 10 crore on Friday. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film’s gross collection stands at approximately Rs 57 crore. The Vijay starrer is maintaining a slight edge over Ajith’s Thunivu.

Since Varisu’s release in Telugu states was delayed by three days, trade analyst Ramesh Bala said on Twitter that the film’s box-collection will get a boost on Saturday with the Telugu release.

Varisu was Vijay’s big release of the year. His last on screen appearance was in 2022’s Beast which also managed to pull in the big numbers, however, it did not receive any critical praise. Varisu, on the other hand, is getting some word of mouth promotion.

Varisu is shameless about being a fan-pandering affair. It’s all one big stage for its hero to dance, and boy he does! Also, it’s heartening to see Vijay’s return to comedy. His scenes with Yogi Babu, though few and fleeting, are the greatest strength of the film.”

Varisu review: Conviction and self-awareness win it for Vijay’s generic masala product

Varisu review: Conviction and self-awareness win it for Vijay’s generic masala product

At one instance, Thee Thalapathy song to be precise, Varisu stops being a film and becomes a showreel of Vijay. The editing turns out to be gaudy and becomes a collage of Vijay’s slo-mo videos that comes across like a fan tribute video you can find on YouTube. In another instance, the movie completely slides into a subplot about saving a girl from human trafficking, and in many instances, it becomes a meta-comedy. Songs and fights arrive exactly where you expect them to come without skipping a beat. But everything that’s supposed to be jarring works because of the conviction with which they are done. It’s silly, dumb, and illogical… but fun.

🌟🌟🌟

Varisu is a mix-mash of many films including Srimanthudu, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Atharintiki Daaredi, and every other iteration of that one story about the succession of the reluctant son, who turns out to be the only hope to save the empire/family. Director Vamshi Paidipally has made a film with a screenplay that comes across as a product of an algorithm that has been fed with keywords: ‘Vijay mass moments’, ‘four fights’, ‘extravagant songs’, ‘masala’, ‘mom-son sentiment’, and ‘Jagapathi Babu’. It features all the age-old tropes of a commercial family entertainer, where the hero ends up fixing the problems of everyone in the family and fighting off one external enemy.

But this isn’t a film about the plot, it is more about the moments it wants to create in the wafer-thin story. Varisu is shameless about being a fan-pandering affair. It’s all one big stage for its hero to dance, and boy he does! Also, it’s heartening to see Vijay’s return to comedy. His scenes with Yogi Babu, though few and fleeting, are the greatest strength of the film. It sets up the tone for what is to come. In the absence of Yogi Babu, Vijay takes up the job of dissing everyone around him. The self-critical comedy frees the film of the shackles of logic. It is pretty self-aware that it makes fun of itself before anyone can. It looks like Vamshi has written the film taking into consideration all the possible criticism it might face, and he has turned them all into badges of honour, which the film proudly flaunts.

That doesn’t give a clean chit to Varisu. As it doesn’t take itself seriously, the flippant nature of the film makes it conflictless. One is not much worried about what’s going to happen next, because it is all common knowledge. There’s no novelty to the experience. We wait for one mass moment after the other or one joke after the other. That makes Varisu more of a product than a film. A product that’s tailor-made for a specific experience, and for a specific set of people. As I walked back, there was a sense of satisfaction of having been on a joyful ride rather than having watched a cinema.

Varisu vs Thunivu: Everything you need to know about epic box office clash between Ajith and Vijay

Varisu vs Thunivu: Everything you need to know about epic box office clash between Ajith and Vijay

“En nabana irukaruthukku endha thaguthiyum venaam, edhiriya irukarathuku thaguthi venum (You don’t need any eligibility to be my friend, but you do need it if you want to be my foe),” is a popular dialogue from Ajith’s Billa (2007). In terms of box office records, Ajith has always had a worthy opponent– Vijay. Though the two actors have always maintained a cordial relationship in real life, when it comes to the film business, it has always been a war. It’s an age-old phenomenon in Tamil cinema, where two top stars have always been tussling with each other in terms of fanbase and collections. We had MGR vs Sivaji, then Rajinikanth vs Kamal Haasan, and now, Vijay vs Ajith.

Over the years, Vijay and Ajith have had releases on the same day, and both have had their share of wins and losses. In fact, Ajith and Vijay are clashing at the box office for the 13th time. It started way back in 1996 when Vijay’s Coimbatore Mappilai and Ajith’s Vanmanthi were released on that year’s Pongal. And their last fight happened in 2014, when Vijay’s Jilla and Ajith’s Veeram were released for that year’s Pongal. Ajith’s Veeram ended up as the winner, and it has to be seen if Vijay will avenge it this time.

But before that one has to see whether the two films have a level playing field. Ever since it was announced that Thunivu and Varisu are coming out on the same day, it created a lot of debate about how the screens will be distributed for the two titans. With Red Giant Movies coming into the picture as a distributor for both films, a pact seems to have been formed. Tiruppur Subramanian, TN Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association President, says, “There are about 1100 to 1200 screens in Tamil Nadu, and they will be shared equally between the two films. There will be no unequal distribution in the number of screens.”

On the other hand, a source tells us that Thunivu is getting more screens than Varisu. The source says, “Wherever Red Giant Movies is distributing both the films, they are getting equal screens. But there are certain areas where Thunivu is getting more screens than Varisu, but that will not create a huge impact. Also, based on the response from the first few days, things will get reshuffled.”

Woes of theatre owners and distributors

However, Tiruppur Subramanian is not very fond of such box-office clashes of superstars. “This is just a loss. Big films like these should come out separately that’s when they can realise their potential. Now, the two will cancel out each other and would only lead to a lose-lose situation.” Echoing his opinion, the proprietor of Vetri Theatre, Rakesh Gowthaman, says, “Imagine, what if Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Vikram had come on the same day? If a film could collect a 2x amount, it would end up collecting half of it, as the rest of the money will go to the other film. A great example of such a counter-productive clash is Petta vs Viswasam (2019). Both were really great commercial hits, but if they had come out separately, they would have done more business than what they had done.”

Rakesh also admits that there are advantages to such a box office clash. “The films are getting released on a long weekend, which will help fill all the seats in theatres, and people will have a choice. But on normal days, two big films clashing will not be a sustainable model. Also, it shouldn’t be films of two big heroes. The ideal situation should be: a big hero film coming out with a relatively smaller star film. When Beast and KGF 2 were released together last year, on a single day, we gave four shows to Vijay’s film and two shows to KGF 2 because for us Vijay is the bigger star than Yash. However, when Beast received a bit of an underwhelming response, we equally shared the shows, which helped both films. This is the ideal situation I am talking about.”

On the other hand, veteran producer Dhananjayan calls such competition a healthy scenario for theatres and cinema in general. When asked about the aforementioned issues of theatres, he says, “Competition always brings in excitement. Aren’t we all more excited for the India vs Pakistan cricket match? If there is no equal competition, we are not worried about the game at all, right? Same way, we have two heroes, who are loved by a lot of people, who are coming out with their respective films, which has created a lot of excitement. If only Varisu or Thunivu is getting released, only the respective fans of the stars will be excited, now the whole industry and cinema fans are waiting to see how this will pan out. So, it is a healthy competition.”

Box office predictions

Ramesh Bala, the box office tracker, admits that the collection of Varisu and Thunivu might get split as the two films have the potential of putting on a solo show. “If they had come out as a solo release, both the films would have earned about Rs 40 to 45 crore on the opening day in Tamil Nadu, but now, with them coming together, I think each one would earn around Rs 20-25 crore on the first day.”

When probed why the makers are reducing the potential of the films by releasing them on the same day, Ramesh opines, “It is because the Pongal holidays are factored in. We have about six to seven days of holidays, and I think they are trying to exploit it. Actually, it shouldn’t be a problem for the films.”

Talking about the weekend collections of both films, he says, “The film is releasing on Wednesday, so you are looking at a long weekend. I think both films would cross the Rs 80 to Rs 100 core mark by the end of Sunday. It is all guesswork only. It all depends on the first-day collection. This kind of clash is ‘okay’ only for the festival season, and that too only for Pongal. Even with Diwali, we won’t get such a long weekend. On other days, this kind of clash will not be good for the cinema business.”

Thunivu director H Vinoth on Ajith-Vijay box office clash: ‘Fans should keep it healthy’

Thunivu director H Vinoth on Ajith-Vijay box office clash: ‘Fans should keep it healthy’

Filmmaker H Vinoth is quite confident about his upcoming movie Thunivu as he suggested that it will be one of the best films of his career so far. The movie is also his third consecutive collaboration with Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar. And he believes as long as there is mutual respect and trust between an actor and director, there is no need to worry about regular collaborations.

“We don’t need to worry about whether or not it’s healthy. As long as that team is doing a good job that’s enough. Ajith sir and I did Nerkonda Paarvai and we both think it’s a very important film. We also did Valimai with good intentions. With all the lessons we learned from the past movies, we have made an entertaining and better movie this time,” he said.He added, “Ajith doesn’t have the airs of a star. He behaves with everyone like a common man. On the sets, he will be like a man next door. We both have a comfortable relationship. We have mutual trust.”

H Vinoth also revealed a lesser-known fact about Ajith’s personality. “People know about Ajith’s interest in racing. But, many don’t know that Ajith is so good with finances. He’s an excellent accountant and he manages his money himself. His advice to everyone is to pay taxes properly. Put the money you owe in tax in a separate bank account. So when it’s time to pay the taxes you won’t feel bad and you don’t get ideas to evade taxes. Keep 10 per cent of your income for charity. When you are well-off, some people will come asking for help and you will be able to help them. The rest of the money is yours to plan day-to-day expenses and investments,” he said.

Ajith is not a fan of his fans dedicating most of their lives to promoting his films. It’s one of the reasons he dissolved his fan clubs over 10 years ago. He’s the only star of his stature to do that.

“Ajith is okay with fans doing certain things for fun. But, he believes that they shouldn’t spend all their time just doing such things. He just wants them to watch when a new movie comes out and celebrate it. But, they shouldn’t abuse anyone using a film. Cinema must be just a part of their lives and not life itself,” Vinoth said.

Thunivu is set to clash at the box office with Tamil superstar Vijay’s Varisu. And this box office clash has been making waves in Tamil Nadu as many are debating who’s the bigger star between Ajith and Vijay.“It’s in the hands of the fans to keep it (competition) healthy. Two films are coming out and there is a long holiday for the Pongal festival. People, who have money, can watch both films. Otherwise, they can select one film and watch it,” Vinoth said.

Bankrolled by Boney Kapoor, Thunivu also stars Manju Warrier and Samuthirakani in pivotal roles. The film is due in cinemas on Wednesday.

Vijay’s Vaarasudu to release on January 14; Dil Raju says ‘audience will wait for good cinema’

Vijay’s Vaarasudu to release on January 14; Dil Raju says ‘audience will wait for good cinema’

Vijay-starrer Varisu‘s Telugu version Vaarasudu will open in cinemas in Telugu states on January 14. The film’s producer Dil Raju announced the release date in a press meet held in Hyderabad. The Vamshi Paidipally directorial is slated for a release in Tamil on January 11.

Revealing the reasons behind the delayed release of Vaarasudu, Raju said, “We are releasing Vaarasudu on January 14. The Tamil version will release worldwide on January 11. The decision for the release of Vaarasudu was taken after having discussions with industry bigwigs. Although the Telugu version will be released a few days later, I have confidence in the film’s success. There will be no problem when we release a movie that is going to be a super hit. We also have the belief that the audience will wait for good cinema. The main reason to release our film on January 14 is we have Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy on January 12, and on the 13th, Waltair Veerayya’s release. My main intentions are these movies should release first and our big Telugu stars should get theatres everywhere.”

He added, “Many times I clarified that our Vaarasudu is not a competition to these two movies. Our movie is a proper family entertainer and a festival film. I have taken this decision on a positive note. All cinemas should prosper and run well. Producers, distributors, everyone should do well financially, and they should be happy.”

Dil Raju also refuted rumours that the delay in the release of Vaarasudu is due to pending post-production work. He said, “All this is wrong news. Telugu version’s copy is ready, and I will have the film’s censor certificate tomorrow.”

Talking about the box office clash between Varisu and Thunivu in Tamil Nadu, Raju shared, “Actually, we have decided Varisu’s release date after having discussions with that film’s (Thunivu) producer. We thought of releasing both films on the same date, either on January 11 or 12. According to that, the decision was taken.”

Vaarasudu also stars Rashmika Mandanna, R Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Shaam, Srikanth, Khushbu, Yogi Babu, Jayasudha and Sangeetha Krish among others.

Varisu trailer: Vijay’s film is old wine in the most decorative bottle

Varisu trailer: Vijay’s film is old wine in the most decorative bottle

Varisu trailer: Vijay film doesn't seem to offer anything new with him playing the youngest son of a rich, business family.

The trailer of Vijay’s upcoming Tamil film Varisu, which is gearing up for release this Pongal festival, was released on Wednesday. Going by the trailer, the plot seems to be about the youngest son of a big family rising to the occasion when their business empire is on the brink of collapse.

Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the film marks his maiden collaboration with Vijay, who is also making his Telugu debut with this project as well.

The trailer pretty much reveals the entire plot of the film. It is the story of one big joint family of Vijay and his two elder brothers. Sarath Kumar plays the patriarch, and he takes care of the business empire. The family is targeted when a business rival decides to play dirty, and it is left to Vijay to hold the family together come what may.

Varisu will be the first major Tamil release of this year along with Ajith’s Thunivu. Both the films are gearing up for an epic box-office clash. Recently, Varisu producer Dil Raju called Vijay as the bigger star than Ajith in Tamil Nadu.

In an interview to Telugu channel NTV, Varisu producer Dil Raju opened up on the clash with Thunivu. Talking about the clash, he said that Vijay is a bigger star than Ajith in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, his film (Varisu) deserves to get more number of screens than Thunivu.

In the clip, Dil Raju said: “In Tamil Nadu, Ajith sir’s film is releasing alongside my film. It is a known fact that Vijay sir is the number 1 star in Tamil Nadu. The state has a total of 800 screens. Right now, both the films are getting equal number of screens. I’m literally begging for at least 50 additional screens for my film because Vijay sir is a bigger star than Ajith.”

Fans took to the comment section to call out the needless comment that’ll unnecessarily instigate fan wars. One comment read: “Someone from another state creating fans fight between Vijay and Ajith . Please ignore this kind of talk going forward (sic).”

Another comment read: “Why is he even comparing the stars? If Vijay is the bigger star, shouldn’t his film automatically be given extra screens (sic).”

Both Varisu and Thunivu are releasing on the same day which is said to be January 12. The makers of both of the movies are yet to officially announce the release date.
